Data Privacy Day at bTrade

Data Privacy Day

January 28th is Data Privacy Day, an international effort centered on “increasing awareness of privacy and data protection issues amongst consumers, organizations and government officials.”  This year marks the eighth annual Data Privacy Day in the United States and Canada which was as an extension of the Data Protection Day celebration in Europe.  Data Protection Day “commemorates the January 28, 1981, signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection.”

Here at bTrade, we support Data Privacy Day and the need for people, government and organizations to respect privacy and safeguard their personal and business data.  We also hope this day further motivates organizations to make the protection of data (data security) a greater priority.

The Relationship between Data Privacy and Data Security

Data privacy and data security can be looked at as having a somewhat interdependent relationship, as they both help deliver data protection for organizations.  Very rarely do companies undertake security initiatives without the end goal being to protect corporate IT and the privacy of consumer information.

Below are the more formal definitions of data privacy and data security:

Definition of data privacy

Wikipedia defines data privacy as “as the relationship between collection and dissemination of data, technology, the public expectation of privacy, and the legal and political issues surrounding them.”

Definition of data security

Wikipedia defines data security as “protecting data, such as a database, from destructive forces, and from the unwanted actions of unauthorized users.”

While the relationship between data privacy and data security cannot be completely covered in this blog post, the important take away is that the main objective of data security is the protection of data privacy.

How Companies Can Ensure Data Privacy Using a Managed File Transfer Solution

Making sure that your organization’s data remains private and is being used properly is a difficult task.  With so much riding on the success of your organization’s privacy and security initiatives, it is imperative to have the right managed file transfer (MFT) solution in place to safeguard your data.

Using a secure MFT solution will provide your organization with a high level of data security that can ensure secure file transfers, whether internal, external or ad-hoc, in a single solution. With a single point of access, you have control over your data, where it goes, how well it is secured while in transit, and if the receiver has received it.  MFT solutions offer many layers of protection, with the end result being enhanced security, privacy and data protection.
